Poetic beauty of winter

tree with bare branches in winter, kolkata

Last Friday (30 January) when I was walking towards Victoria Memorial Hall for a quick city tour with a friend I saw this tree standing tall with its bare branches spread in all directions. It looked beautiful to me. I don’t know why so many people hate winter, because I have heard from many of my friends and acquaintances that they don’t like winter at all. Winter brings with it a lot of memories for me. My childhood memories of winter are still so fresh! Winter means variety of pickles, fruits, home-made sweets and outdoor activities.

And most of all, winter sets the path to a fresh new beginning. Winter too has a poetic beauty that I saw in this bare tree.

bare branches of tree in winter, Kolkata

Drive my dead thoughts over the universe
Like withered leaves to quicken a new birth!
And, by the incantation of this verse,
Scatter, as from an unextinguished hearth
Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind!
Be through my lips to unawakened earth
The trumpet of a prophecy! O, wind,
If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?

~Percy Bysshe Shelley

  1. I think one of the reasons why people hate winter is that the leaves are shedding and it does seem a little dry and bland. But there is a beauty to it which you have captured very well. It is the onset of something new, something fresh and vivid..

  3. I am one of those people who love winter – I think I have mentioned it before 😀 as not much of a cold winter here in the South, my idea shouldn’t qualify as of the real winter-winter 😀

  4. This is a beautiful capture indeed…
I am one of those who don’t like winter… though I can appreciate the poetic beauty of it in snow, in mist and in pictures like these.. I just cannot experience it 🙂

  5. I’m one of those who dislike winter. The temperature is -10, you’re subjected to the strong winds from the Black sea, your fingers are frozen through, you can’t keep your balance on the slippery sidewalk – well, you’ve got the idea 🙂 Your photo is beautiful, and so is your winter.
